The MozambES team is celebrating the success of its mangrove restoration program holding a series of events with the participating groups.
From March to December 2024, participants from 10 Savings and Rotating Credit Groups took part in the Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Program, in Nhangau, Beira, Mozambique, promoted by MozambES with support from the Natural Resource Management Committee of Nhangau
Each of the groups—Batanane, Cupezana, Deus Proverá, Empreendedor, Família Organizada de Tchonja, Membros Unidos Voluntários de Tsime, Poupança Nova, Nova Vida, Poupança Alegre, and Somos Irmãos—has demonstrated exceptional commitment to conservation. Their dedication and efforts have ensured that mangrove restoration is not just an initiative, but a long-term community practice.
These collective efforts led to:
✅ 18 hectares of replanted mangrove forests
✅ 10 community-run mangrove nurseries, nurturing approximately 8,000 plants for future reforestation.
✅ Ongoing monitoring and protection, ensuring the sustainability of restored areas.
This effort has not been without challenges—many of the selected sites were remote and difficult to access, requiring a strong commitment from community members.
Mangroves provide essential ecosystem services, including:
🌊 Protecting coastlines from erosion and extreme weather events.
🐟 Supporting local fisheries by creating habitats for marine life.
💚 Sequestering carbon, helping mitigate climate change.
MozambES is funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) under grant agreement FCT-AGAKHAN/541744715/2019. This project showcases the power of aligning conservation and economic sustainability, proving that local communities can lead the way in protecting the environment while securing their livelihoods.
