WP6 – Project Management and Dissemination

Objective:

The main objective of WP6 is to coordinate all Work Packages (WPs) and monitor project outputs (T6.1), disseminate and communicate results to different audiences (T6.2), and pursue fundraising activities to ensure that the PES scheme can expand and continue beyond MozambES’ lifetime (T6.3).

Project Launch and Coordination:

The project was officially launched with a kick-off meeting held online on 24 February 2022, with participation from all project partners. During the meeting, each partner presented the WPs they are responsible for and discussed activity planning. Regular meetings have since been held throughout the year, either with the full team or with specific partners, as appropriate.

Communication and Dissemination:

The project website has been continuously updated with project activities: www.mozambe.com.

A YouTube playlist was created, featuring videos produced with the Rotating Savings and Credit Groups, as well as a closing video celebrating the program’s achievements:

From March to December 2024, participants from ten Rotating Savings and Credit Groups actively engaged in the Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Program in Nhangau, Beira, Mozambique, supported by the MozambES project and the Nhangau Natural Resources Management Committee. The participating groups—Batanane, Cupezana, Deus Proverá, Empreendedor, Família Organizada de Tchonja, Membros Unidos Voluntários de Tsime, Poupança Nova, Nova Vida, Poupança Alegre, and Somos Irmãos—demonstrated exceptional commitment, ensuring that mangrove restoration became a long-term community practice rather than a one-time initiative.

Social Media and Online Communication:

Initially, the project utilized its Twitter account for dissemination (https://twitter.com/mozambes), but by October 2024, the team observed greater impact via LinkedIn through the Environmental Economics Knowledge Center (EEKC) at Nova SBE. From then on, project updates and news were shared via the EEKC website (https://www.novasbe.unl.pt/en/environmental/news ) and LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/nova-environmental-economics-knowledge-center), while the Twitter account continued to provide updates.

Stakeholder Engagement and Press Coverage:

The Nova SBE team held meetings with local stakeholders in Nhangau, replacing a planned workshop. Social media pages were regularly updated with relevant project news. The team also communicated ongoing work to the press, resulting in several online articles in Portuguese newspapers:

Events:

  • A seminar/webinar was held at Nova SBE by Aurélie Shapiro from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), entitled “Geo-spatial technologies for mapping and monitoring mangroves” in November 2022. The seminar presented her work on mangrove ecosystem mapping along the coast of Mozambique conducted in 2018, and was transmitted online via Zoom.

  • The MozambES project was also showcased at the Nova Sustainability Week on 13 September 2022, during a round table on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) applied in research.

  • Following the field visit in April 2023, the Nova SBE team traveled to Maputo to hold meetings with potential donors and the Ministry of the Environment and Forests, ensuring the sustainability of the PES scheme beyond the scope of the project (T6.3).

During the third year of the project, the MozambES team participated in several international events related to mangrove conservation and blue carbon:

  • Forum on Blue Carbon from Space, May 2024, Bern, Switzerland – Salomão Bandeira

  • 11th Conference of Parties (COP11) to the Nairobi Convention, August 2024, Antananarivo – Salomão Bandeira
